When you live in an apartment, it can be tough to achieve that homey feeling. I’ve lived in apartments for nearly 20 years and sadly, most of them look the same. White walls, basic flooring, mini-blinds… it can be challenging to know how to make it feel unique and personalized.

Luckily, with a little DIY mojo and not much money, you can give your home the decor it (and you!) deserves. One of my favorite ways of creating that homey feeling is with houseplants. Houseplants tout wonderful benefits. They help purify the air, add natural energy to your home, infuse your space with color, and allow you to develop your nurturing side. If you talk to em like I do, you’ll be quite the proud mama (or papa). Here are some ideas & tutorials for giving your new plant babies a stylish new home.

Terra cotta and clay pots are my go-to for cheap planters that I can easily customize. Check out these mini planters I made over for some succulent babies I’m raising. No tutorial needed: just give the pots a few good coats of paint and finish with a water-based sealer.

Or if you’re feeling something fancier, A Beautiful Mess has a super simple tutorial for giving your pots some vintage or boho flair with lace.

Who says glitter is only for the holidays? Zhush up those basic planters with a healthy coat of glitter, like this sparkly pink one from The Pretty Bee.

Yet another way to dress up those terra cotta pots is with a marble effect. Head over to Hello Glow to find out how to create this look by repurposing nail polish.

This DIY driftwood planter from eHow is perfect for tiny succulents, since they need very little water. You could use this as a centerpiece like shown, or add to any surface area to create a rustic, earthy look.

Oh So Very Pretty has another decorative way to use air plants with this hanging mason jar tutorial. I especially like that these are hanging with the damage-free hooks, so they won’t alter your rented walls.

A Little Bit Funky has an easy project for showing off your houseplants: DIY painted animal planters. These would be perfect in any room, especially a child’s room.

Add some green to your kitchen and some flavor to your recipes with this easy tutorial for window herb planters from Jill M. No installation required makes you winning at getting that apartment deposit back! These would be great in any room, too.

Most landlords aren’t keen on holes in the walls, so hooks for hanging plants may be a no-go for your home. Enter this stylish alternative: a metal clothing rack to display your hanging baskets. (The interwebs are full of tutorials on how to build these from plumbing materials, if you want the DIY route.)

If you can install hooks in your ceiling or if there’s already one installed, create a hanging string garden–kokedama– with this tutorial from Design Sponge. Hell, you could even make these and hang them off a rack like above.

Our Humble Abode also has a great project for repurposing plumbing materials with this wood and copper plant stand. Plant stands like these tie in well with mid-century modern decor.

Houseplants like pothos or heartleaf philodendron can be used as decor themselves, by extending their long stems to the walls. This is a great idea for banishing white wall syndrome or infusing a jungle effect to your space.

Lastly, if you just know you cannot be responsible for another living creature, go faux and check out my 7 tips for decorating with artificial houseplants.
