My Bedroom Makeover: Version 3.0

I never used to like pink. My childhood bedroom was pink (not by choice) and when I was a teen I’d finally had enough, demanding it be changed. That’s right, I gave my parents an ultimatum: paint it teal or I run away!

Actually, that did not happen and my parents were kind enough to oblige my first love: green-blue.

Many years later, pink started seeping its way back into my life like some radioactive ooze from a 90s cartoon. But much like our beloved ass-kicking turtles, pink has changed my home in a good way. Using pink has challenged me to step outside my comfort zone, forcing me to be creative with a palette I’ve never used.

Last July, I painted an accent wall in my bedroom with a perfect pink: a warm shade that doesn’t feel entirely pink nor salmon. It’s complex and just right. Then this summer, I took another plunge and painted the remaining walls of my bedroom with this color. I was itching for a change and I had lots left over from the accent wall, so I went for it.

Of course, the walls couldn’t be the only part of the makeover, so I rearranged my furniture and revamped the decor. The previous decor was looking a bit too cottage-y and twee, so I restyled it with slightly more modern items with a bohemian edge.  I also infused the room with more metallics, mixing silver, gold, and champagne.

I went even further outside my comfort zone and rearranged the furniture. This created a challenge as the room’s layout then became asymmetric. After a while this look grew on me, especially with how it makes my bedroom feel much larger.

Above the bed, I replaced the old “headboard,” a beaded garland/swag, with an abstract canvas I’d had on another wall. I found the art helped balance the asymmetric layout of the window and wall.

These shelves are quite practical since I have little space on that side for a bedside table. I use the bottom shelf to hold my phone, eye cream, and lip balm.

It also helps ground the space more, balancing the abundance of pink and white. Plus, it’s soooo soft. It feels like buttah.

I also changed the bedskirt to offset all the color. I’m just not one for bright, punchy bedrooms—I prefer light and airy. To offset the extra color on the walls, I made a new skirt with an old fabric shower curtain and added trim to the bottom for a little detail.

My dresser area got a decent makeover, as I created a bedroom landing strip area. This is the most practical aspect of the makeover. It’s not only highly functional as my daily items are in easy reach, but it also serves as a staging area for my clothing (should I ever venture outside and not wear workout clothes).

I bought a new mirror for the dresser and revamped it with chalk paint and distressing. I swapped trays and brought in one from my makeshift linen closet for my most common toiletries and perfumes. The tray matches the walls and adds a bit more color to the room in a mellow, cohesive way.

I also added a lovely thrift store score, this possibly vintage glass dish, to replace my basket jewelry organizers. The dish is perfect for sorting my most common jewelry items plus it matches the bowl in my bedside corner.

Since most of my decor is DIY, secondhand or from places that don’t always restock like Home Goods, I don’t have a lot of source info. However, you can check out the paint color, Behr’s Shrimp Toast, the corner shelves from Target, and the sheer curtains from IKEA. I wish I had more info for you, but then I also dig it this way because it makes my home even more unique. 🙂 One can only do mass-marketed chic for so long.

How do you feel about pink? Could you or have you decorated a room in it? What shade of pink is your favorite? How long will it be before I make over my bedroom again?

  2. WHat a pretty color! I have never been a huge pink fan but that color rocks!

  3. Beautiful! I love it. I want to redo my room to look more like this. Thanks for the inspiration

  4. Very pretty and soft, love it !!! I too have become enamored with pink in the past few years. And discovered pale aqua. My quilt is a pink floral and have pink lamp and glassware. The aqua is in bottles and milk glass on my dresser. I find it all very feminine and restful and now it is a pleasure to be in there!!!
