The Perfect Shade of Gray: an End Table Makeover

It is with great pleasure that I'm announcing the newest arrival to my home. I bought this mid-century modern (MCM) end table early in the summer and can finally share its revamped beauty. I moved right after I bought it, so its makeover was delayed. It's one of my favorite thrift store scores to date.

The table was painted with a delicate neutral I've found is the perfect shade of gray--Sterling by Behr Premium Plus Ultra. It's dark enough to stand out as gray, yet light enough that it doesn't feel overwhelming or gloomy. This gray just has an ethereal, airy quality to it. Read along to learn more about my makeover, including how I revamped its doors.

This table is a very solid and sturdy piece, which is one of things I love about using vintage furniture. Things just aren’t made like they once were. The table is also pretty deep, so it’s great for storage.

I also love the bowtie handles, which inspired the design on the IKEA Rast dressers I previously painted. To freshen up the handles, I cleaned them with an SOS pad. Good as new. However, the hinges were another story. I scrubbed those bad boys just to find they were gold underneath. So they met up with some Rustoleum Titanium Silver spray paint. Much better.

To change up the insets in the doors, I used patterned sheet metal. I chose the union jack pattern because (1) it was cheaper and (2) I preferred the finish of this silver compared to the others. Its geometric pattern complements the mid-century aesthetic of the table and  also the touches of Moroccan decor I’m still using in my living room.

To prepare the sheet metal insets, I measured and cut a paper version, tracing this with a marker onto the back of the sheet metal. I then cut the metal with a pair of Stanley All-Purpose Snips. Hot glue was used to attach the panels to the doors.

While I’m overjoyed to be done, I’m already pondering what my next fix project will be. I think I may be addicted to painting furniture. Or thrift store shopping. Or MCM pieces. Or a little bit of all three.

  9. I would NEVER think to use sheet metal. I would probably take one look at that and think “yeah I could paint it, but I don’t love the doors… next”. You have opened my eyes!! I bet on my next thrift store adventure I’ll see things in a different light. Thank you!

  10. Glad I could provide some inspiration! I discovered the sheet metal one day at Home Depot while I was just browsing the aisles. The patterns had me at hello. Thanks for commenting!
