Entryway Makeover: Before and After

My entryway desperately needed a makeover. My apartment doesn't have an entrance that is distinct from the rest of my space, so the entrance had to be done over in a way that made it shine, yet still felt airy and light. It also needed to be functional and organized. Continue reading to see what I used to create this clean, simple entryway makeover.

My goal for the entryway was to define it as a separate space from the rest of my home. To achieve this, I decorated most of it with light neutrals. Even though I made over this area to be distinct, the space coordinates with the rest of my home’s decor. This was done by using mid-century modern decor/shapes, a cool gray on the dressers, and a dash of the same turquoise used in my home office.

The largest (and most time-consuming) part of the entryway makeover was revamping these IKEA Rast dressers. I chose dressers so I could have hidden storage and a sizable piece of furniture to help anchor the define the space as the entrance to my home. Since these dressers are on the smallish side, I purchased two and placed them side by side to mimic a larger dresser.

With the exception of the dressers, my entryway makeover was fairly simple because I kept the decor items to a minimum. To save money, I used accessories I already had and repainted a mirror frame (see below).

The dressers also provide a surface for a landing strip. Creating a landing strip in the entrance of your home is key because it helps you keep clutter at bay and stay organized.

In the canister, I store my workout gadgets. I scored it on clearance from Target a while ago in the kitchen area for about $4. I added an IKEA Attest knob to the lid so it’s easier to open—the lid wasn’t very ergonomic because it’s airtight. Probably why it was on clearance. 😮

The bowl is from Big Lots and was quite cheap. I really dig the asymmetrical shape of it. Inside the bowl, there’s a small ramekin for spare change. I also placed a woven basket to store incoming mail; I believe this was purchased at Target.

The coat rack is an Eames-inspired coatrack I made years ago with the help of Danielle from Thompson Family-Life’s tutorial.  Originally, I created this coatrack with the wooden balls painted in colors. I painted over them last year with silver. I’m happy to say it’s held up pretty well.

The quatrefoil mirror was also purchased from Target years ago. I revamped it a few coats of the same teal I used for my tanker desk makeover last year. I just so love this shade of turquoise/teal.

You may have noticed there are no shoes here in the entrance. That’s because I have yet to find a rug I like for this space. I’m considering something natural, like a sisal rug.

I really dig the new look. I’m quite pleased with it, considering how it’s a temporary makeover. It’s functional yet decorative. What do you think?
