Bedroom Makeover Update: Revamped Shelves & Vignette
I used the paintable wallpaper to cover some shelves and created this vignette on a narrow strip of wall in my bedroom. The shelves came from Target and my happy place, IKEA. I never knew just how cheap these shelves at IKEA were—only a couple bucks for the ones I bought in the EKBY LAIVA line.
I didn’t hang the shelves symmetrically because of the light-switch, but the shape they create was a happy accident. The outer shape combined with the shelf brackets reminds me of a pagoda or lantern, which ties in perfectly with the rest of the decor in the room.
On the shelves, I’ve used several bowls to store my jewelry and other odds and ends. They were all cheap as I got them at places like Big Lots, IKEA, and Target and were also inexpensive because they’re from the kitchen aisles, not the decor aisles. The succulent arrangement is actually fake (check out how to make it here) and the dragonfly I bought at Target—one of the few things I bought new for this bedroom makeover.
The bamboo salad bowl adds to the natural, beachy vibe of the bedroom, as does the wooden bird. This little fellow is hand-carved from wood and was bought at a thrift store for a couple dollars. I got it with the intention of painting, but it tied in so nicely with the earthy vibe of bedroom that I left it as is.
To transform the shelves, I used paintable wallpaper, Mod Podge, and Minwax Polycrylic finish in Semi-Gloss. I love the texture of this wallpaper:
I debated painting them a light brown to simulate wood, but decided upon white. Leaving them white allows them to blend into the walls and create more visual space in the bedroom.
You could even make these over without the Polycrylic finish, but I wanted a tougher finish on the shelves & to eliminate some of the tackiness from the Mod Podge. An alternative to using the paintable wallpaper is any other form of paper, such as scrapbook paper or wrapping paper.
Next up on the bedroom transformation is one of my favorite redecorating methods: new pillow covers!

This looks great! I love how frugal you are. You really do have an artistic flair and are quite cerebral about your decorating – something I admire in people. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thanks! Being frugal with this room’s makeover was crucial (and challenging)… but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I love the freshness of the white – so pretty!
